'Knot' so much fun: 20,000 weddings in Delhi today

New Delhi:
Today is Akshay Tritiya, also a Sunday. But if you are planning to go shopping you may have to navigate through traffic jams reason being that there are 20,000-odd weddings in Delhi alone!!

All the ghodis are booked for May 16.

Dr Supreet Kaur, bride-to-be says, "Friends are getting married, relatives are getting married, colleagues are getting married, like a parrot I will have to choose one invite."

Dr Supreet Kaur considers herself lucky as her family has managed to book a venue on a day when Delhi will see 20,000-odd weddings.

"A party of 800 people got cancelled and we happen to get the booking," says the blushing bride.

Venues have been booked months in advance. The Delhi High Court banned weddings in more than 600 municipal parks, which means the crunch for the big fat Indian Wedding got a whole lot worse. People in the business hope there were more of these auspicious days.

Himanshu Kathuria, New Variety Decorators, says, "We can take one or two bookings, more auspicious days means better business."

The heat has only added to the madness, with flower arrangements left to the last minute. Even beauty parlours have their hands already full and are refusing clients for the much important bridal make-up.

All roads lead to wedding venues today, so get ready to face the heat. Wait in traffic, give way to the baratis as they dance their way to the venue and if you are the bride or groom, be ready to lift your finery and walk to the venue and if you have to do none of this, that's a relief, stay home and say "Thank God it's a Sunday!"
