Udhagamandalam, Tamil Nadu:
A casual labourer was trampled to death on Thursday by a herd of elephants at Thengumarada, about 80 km from Udhagamandalam. Forest department sources said, the 35-year-old man was among a group of labourers going for work, when the herd attacked them. Other workers managed to escape, they said.
As the workers regrouped and started making a loud noise, the elephants retreated into the forest. Meanwhile, a 15-year-old female elephant, which fell into a pit some 40 hours ago at Nanjundapuram in Coimbatore district, was rescued by forest officials this morning, police said.
