For uniform power tariff, Mumbai looks to Delhi

Nagpur: Bowing to pressure from members cutting across party lines, the Maharashtra government has assured the legislative assembly that it will consider uniformity in electricity tariff in Mumbai on par with the Delhi pattern.

Replying to Subhash Desai (Sena) and others during question hour over rise in power tariff by Reliance Power in Mumbai, Energy Minister Ajit Pawar assured the House that the Delhi pattern would be studied.

The members contended that the increase in power bills of Reliance was unjustified and there should be one rate for the entire metropolis.

Earlier, Pawar had said four companies including Reliance, Tata and BEST are supplying power to Mumbai and the tariff is different due to different sources of power generation.

Tata is producing power through hydro which is the cheapest one, while others are producing power through thermal and gas. So the rates cannot remain the same, he said.
