BMW victim was on a different route that day
Delhi: Sixty-two-year-old BMW accident victim Om Dutt Chauhan chose the wrong day to switch his morning walk territory.

A resident of Pandav Nagar in east Delhi was a regular morning walker and always visited the Safeda Van near Mayur Vihar, Phase-1 with his friends. But on Thursday, Chauhan woke up late and went instead to the Akshardham road with four of his friends and his son Mahesh. At around 6.30 am when Chauhan was on his way home, he was run over by a speeding BMW.

"We were all walking back together but Chauhan was moving hurriedly a few steps ahead of us, as he had to answer the call of nature. Suddenly we realised that a speeding BMW was coming from the wrong direction and in the blink of an eye the car hit Chauhan," said Sanjay Rawat, a friend of the deceased. "After hitting Chauhan the BMW somersaulted thrice and then stopped," he added.

According to the police, "The BMW was being driven by Raman Singla and there were two others in the car. Raman is a resident of Madhu Vihar near Karkardooma and he previously owned the Singla Restaurant at Madhu Vihar with his father Baburam Singla."

Relatives alleged that Chauhan was not provided medical care by the police on time and he lay bleeding on the spot for about 30 minutes.

"The cops took the BMW occupants to the police station first and then took my uncle to hospital. If they had taken prompt action, my uncle would have been alive," the victim's nephew said. Rajesh, an eyewitness, also echoed similar views and said Chauhan was conscious and the police took about 30 minutes to take him to hospital. "He could have been saved if the police had taken him to hospital on time," he said.

Angry locals damaged the BMW, blocked traffic and shouted slogans. Senior police officials, including Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police I B Rani visited the spot and tried to pacify the locals.

Investigations are on and the accused was arrested on the spot but he got out on bail a few hours later.

A case of culpable homicide and rash and negligent driving has been registered

at the Pandav Nagar police station.
