The compact SUV segment continued to dominate the Indian passenger vehicle market in April 2026, with strong demand across urban and semi-urban regions. From the popular Tata Punch to the Toyota Taisor, Indian buyers showed a clear preference for feature-loaded compact SUVs offering high ground clearance, modern technology, and fuel-efficient powertrains. Interestingly, the top three compact SUVs were separated by less than 1,000 units, making April one of the most competitive months for the sub4m SUV category this year.

Tata Punch
The Tata Punch emerged as the best-selling compact SUV in India in April 2026 with 19,107 units sold. The sub4m SUV posted a massive 52.9 per cent year-on-year growth, making it one of the fastest-growing models in the segment. The Punch continues to attract buyers with its SUV-like design, high seating position, and practicality for city driving.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx ranked second among compact SUVs in April 2026, achieving sales of 18,829 units. The SUV recorded a notable 31.3 percent YoY growth and trailed the Punch by just 278 units. Its sporty crossover design and frugal petrol engines have fueled its rising popularity.

Tata Nexon
The Tata Nexon claimed the third spot with 18,126 units sold last month. The compact SUV registered a 17.3 per cent increase in sales compared to April 2025. Tata Motors collectively sold 37,233 units of the Punch and Nexon, strengthening its hold in the compact SUV segment.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza
The Maruti Suzuki Brezza witnessed a drop in sales as volumes declined 16.8 per cent YoY to 14,124 units. Despite remaining among the top-selling subcompact SUVs, reports suggest that customers could be waiting for the upcoming facelifted version before making a purchase decision.

Hyundai Venue
The Hyundai Venue posted one of the strongest performances in April 2026 and is the fifth best-selling compact SUV of the month, with 12,420 units sold. The sub4m SUV saw a huge 56.2 per cent year-on-year growth, helped by the launch of the updated model and its 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating.
Kia Sonet
The Kia Sonet continued its steady momentum in the Indian market with 10,537 units sold in April 2026. The compact SUV recorded a healthy 30.6 per cent annual growth and remained one of the brand's strongest-selling products.
Hyundai Exter
The Hyundai Exter grabbed the seventh spot in the list of best-selling compact SUVs in April 2026 with 8,096 units. The compact SUV posted a strong 49.5 per cent growth compared to the same month last year. Its micro-SUV positioning and feature-rich package continue to attract first-time SUV buyers.
Mahindra XUV 3XO
The Mahindra XUV 3XO managed to sell 7,517 units in April 2026. Sales remained nearly flat with a marginal 0.7 per cent decline year-on-year. However, the compact SUV continues to remain relevant in the segment due to its strong performance-oriented appeal.
Skoda Kylaq
The Skoda Kylaq experienced a difficult month as sales dropped 23.8 per cent to 4,089 units. Despite the decline, the compact SUV continues to appeal to buyers looking for premium European styling and driving dynamics in the sub-4 m SUV category.
Toyota Taisor
The Toyota Taisor rounded off the top 10 compact SUV list with 2,550 units sold in April 2026. The rebadged version of the Fronx registered a modest 5.3 per cent YoY growth and continues to contribute stable volumes for Toyota in the compact SUV segment.
