Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle recently launched the Sierra SUV in the Indian market. Now, without any break, the Indian automaker has switched gears to launch another product in the country, i.e., the petrol-powered version of the Harrier, which will likely be followed by the launch petrol-powered version of the Safari. Until now, both vehicles were available only with a diesel engine in the Indian market.
Before the official launch, dealerships had begun receiving the petrol variant of the Harrier. It is equipped with a Hyperion engine, a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, direct-injection turbo petrol engine that generates 170 hp of power and 280 Nm of torque. This engine has been in development for more than five years and is set to be introduced in Tata's mass-market SUVs.

The new turbo-petrol engine will likely come with both manual and automatic transmission options in the Harrier. The unit spotted in the video features an automatic transmission. Given that Tata has not provided the same engine with a manual option in the Sierra, it remains uncertain if the Harrier and Safari will have a petrol engine with a manual transmission.
The existing 2.0-litre diesel engine available in the Harrier and Safari generates 167 hp and 350 Nm of peak torque. This engine is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission. Currently, the Safari's starting price is Rs 14.66 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Harrier starts at Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom).

The addition of a turbo petrol engine could enhance the appeal of these models against their competitors, given that many rivals in the segment offer petrol options alongside diesel variants. Additionally, it may lead to a reduction in the prices of both SUVs.
