Maruti Suzuki seems to have become the warrior who defeated the SUVs at a time when they appeared to be an empire at the peak of its power. The compact sedan has become the best-selling car in Calendar Year 2025, while SUVs are the preferred choice of consumers in the market.

This looks like a big achievement for the model as it has come at a time when the SUVs have been dominating the market trends, capturing the biggest shares of the market.  Maruti Suzuki's 30 percent of total sales came from SUVs. Meanwhile, the body type captured 55 percent of the total passenger vehicle market.

Coming to the numbers, Maruti Suzuki Dzire accumulated sales of 2.14 lakh units, earning the top spot on the list of best-selling models. It was followed by SUVs, including Creta, with the sales of 2.01 lakh units, and Tata Nexon with 2.01 lakh units. Meanwhile, the fourth and fifth spot was taken by Maruti Suzuki WagonR and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, respectively. WagonR registered sales of 1.94 lakh units, and Ertiga sold 1.92 lakh units.

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire has always been among the favoured choices for family buyers and is also highly sought after by fleet operators under the Tour S guise. The Dzire's strong fundamentals have played a significant role in appealing to family-oriented consumers.

The latest generation model was introduced in late 2024, which has helped maintain the model's relevance in the market and establish a clear identity distinct from the Swift hatchback. It's also worth noting that the new-generation Dzire consistently outsells its closest competitors - the Hyundai Aura and the latest Honda Amaze, within the segment.

The data highlights a significant change in India's automotive market. Although SUVs currently represent more than half of the overall industry sales, the most popular model remains a compact sedan, emphasizing the ongoing relevance of value, efficiency, and total ownership costs in consumer purchasing choices.

Simultaneously, the company noted that its hatchback segment continued to contribute significantly to overall sales. The Baleno became the leading model in December 2025, with 22,108 units sold, showcasing sustained interest in the premium hatchback category, even as SUVs prevail in the wider market.
