Video: Kerala Chief Minister's Expression On Car Mods Question Is Viral

Kerala's newly sworn-in Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan is once again going viral. During the election campaign, his party had released a poster promising that car modifications would be legalised in the state if he came to power. Now that he has taken office, Satheesan was asked whether he intends to fulfil that promise. Responding with a cheeky expression and a knowing smile, the Chief Minister hinted that the issue would be examined seriously, especially from a safety and regulatory standpoint, setting off fresh discussions among automotive enthusiasts across the state.

He further said, "If we have promised it, it will be done'. Giving enthusiasts further reassurance, he says ' We are here to fulfill promises. All of us (the ministers and MLAs) are here to serve the interests of the citizens, to turn their dreams into realities. Particularly, the dreams and wants of the younger folk. We did not make the statement (of legalising safe modifications) to merely drive votes and rise to power." The video posted by neelakkuyil_entertainments reveals.

While car modifications have always been a topic of keen interest in Kerala, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has historically taken a very strict stance on enforcement. Recent comments by the Chief Minister, however, suggesting that safe modifications could be permitted, have brought a sense of relief to the enthusiast community.

Often referred to as 'Mod's Own Country' by car enthusiasts for its distinctive builds, Kerala could see more tastefully modified vehicles on its roads if such changes are allowed. That said, the move also presents a challenge - the state will need to clearly define what constitutes a 'safe modification' to avoid ambiguity.

Under the Central Motor Vehicles Act, vehicle modifications are broadly restricted, meaning any relaxation would require a state-level framework within legal boundaries. If Satheesan is able to formalise and legalise modifications to a limited extent, it would be a significant moment for Kerala's automotive enthusiasts. Such a move could also prompt enthusiast communities in other states to seek similar allowances.
