Honda Cars is betting big on the Indian market and plans to roll out 10 new products by 2030. The company showcased the O Alpha Electric SUV concept at the Tokyo Motor Show earlier this week, which will play a key role in Honda's EV roadmap in India.

Honda Cars India currently sells three models in India: City, Amaze, and Elevate. Top officials said that the company is monitoring the trends in the Indian market and customer preferences. Of the 10 new products, seven them will be SUVs across different segments and fuel types.

Honda's O Series has three EVs under development. The list includes two SUVs and a Saloon. Among these the O Alpha is targeted for India and other Asian markets. Honda intends to manufacture the SUV in India and export it. The market launch is expected by the end of the financial year 2027.

The 0 Series SUV is likely to be the full-size flagship product, which is targeted for the US market. Speaking of the battery technology, CATL will be the partner to supply the cells for the upcoming EVs. The cells for batteries of Alpha SUV production in India will be procured from CATL's Indonesia plant.

The officials are tight-lipped about the product offensive but are confident of adopting a multi-fuel strategy. Honda sees growth potential in the sub-4 metre SUV space in India as well. Without disclosing the launch timeline, the brand confirmed entry into this space. The recent revision in taxation has provided an impetus to this segment, where cars under 4-metre length (under 1.5-litre diesel, 1.2-litre petrol) attract 18 per cent GST. The segment has multiple players, including Brezza, Venue, Sonet, 3XO, and Nexon.

Of the other products, Honda will bring in global models to India. They are expected to be completely built units (CBU). Honda did not rule out the possibility of performance-oriented models.

Honda Car India sold 68,650 units in the domestic market in the calendar year 2024. The brand reaffirmed its commitment towards the Indian market, calling it 'key' to global plans, despite a drop in sales over the years. The top officials said they expect to regain lost ground with the new product offensive.
