Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is set to mark a significant milestone in India with the debut of its first plug-in hybrid SUV on June 9, 2026. While the company has not officially confirmed the model or launch strategy, early teasers suggest that this could be BYD's entry into the country's still-developing premium PHEV segment.
BYD Teases 'DM-i' Hybrid Technology
Through its social media channels, BYD has hinted at introducing its 'DM-i Super Plug-In Hybrid EV' powertrain in India. This technology combines a petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack, aiming to deliver extended range and improved fuel efficiency.

Although it remains unclear whether the upcoming event will be a formal launch or just a showcase, BYD's messaging indicates a strong intent to expand beyond its current electric-only portfolio in India. The brand, known for premium EV offerings, appears to be evaluating the potential of plug-in hybrids as a bridge between conventional internal combustion vehicles and fully electric mobility.

Two Likely Contenders
Speculation points towards two possible models: the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i and the BYD Atto 2 DM-i. Both SUVs have been spotted testing on Indian roads, suggesting they are under consideration for the market.

The BYD Atto 2 DM-i is expected to be positioned in the highly competitive mid-size SUV segment, rivalling models such as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in terms of footprint. It is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with either a 7.8 kWh or 18 kWh battery pack. The combined driving range is claimed to be up to 928 km and 998 km, respectively, with a pure electric range of up to 40 km and 90 km.

Sealion 6 DM-i: Larger and More Powerful
On the other hand, the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i is a larger SUV, comparable in size to the Toyota Fortuner. It also uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine but offers both naturally aspirated and turbocharged configurations. The hybrid system is paired with larger battery packs of 18.3 kWh and 26.6 kWh.

The naturally aspirated version is expected to produce 218 bhp with a front-wheel-drive layout, while the turbocharged variant could deliver up to 344 bhp and feature all-wheel drive. Notably, the Sealion 6 DM-i promises a combined range of up to 1,092 km and a pure electric range of up to 140 km.
Expanding India's PHEV Landscape
BYD's upcoming debut could play a key role in shaping India's plug-in hybrid segment, which currently remains limited in both choice and adoption. Whether the company introduces one or both models, the move signals a broader strategy to diversify electrified offerings and cater to buyers seeking extended range without full dependence on charging infrastructure.
