Mahindra has firmly established itself as India's leading SUV manufacturer, dominating the traditional SUV space with the immense success of the Scorpio (Classic and N), Thar, and Thar Roxx. The company continues to evolve, with updates planned for the Scorpio N, Thar, and Thar Roxx. Introduced a couple of years ago, the Thar Roxx quickly gained popularity, with both 3-door and 5-door versions generating long waiting periods. Fresh images now reveal a heavily camouflaged Thar Roxx under testing, likely featuring the smaller 1.5-litre diesel engine promised during its launch.
The recent spy shots reveal Mahindra testing the Thar Roxx under heavy camouflage. The images showcase two test mules-one fitted with steel rims and the other sporting alloy wheels-hinting at variant differentiation. While the overall design, including the front grille, appears consistent with the current model, subtle changes are expected. Notably, the SUV's badging could be revised to highlight the introduction of a smaller engine option under the hood, aligning with Mahindra's promise of expanding the Thar Roxx lineup with a 1.5-litre diesel.

Although the styling of the Thar Roxx test mule shows no major changes, the focus appears to be under the bonnet. At launch, Mahindra had hinted at introducing a smaller 1.5-litre diesel engine for lower variants, much like the strategy adopted with the 3-door Thar. Now, with initial customer demand for the Roxx largely fulfilled, Mahindra seems ready to broaden its appeal. By offering this new engine option, the brand aims to attract a wider audience and strengthen its position in the competitive SUV market.

The Mahindra Thar Roxx currently begins at Rs 12.25 lakh (ex-showroom) for the MX1 2.0-litre petrol RWD and Rs 13.48 lakh (ex-showroom) for the MX1 2.2-litre diesel RWD. Reports suggest Mahindra may introduce a new 1.5-litre diesel variant, which would serve as the fresh entry-level option in the lineup. By lowering the starting price point, this move could make the Roxx more accessible to a wider customer base, while strengthening Mahindra's SUV portfolio and driving sales momentum across multiple trim levels.

If the Thar 3-Door 1.5-litre Diesel RWD is any indication, the upcoming Thar Roxx 1.5-litre Diesel could become the most popular choice among buyers who value its design and road presence over hardcore capability. An automatic gearbox for this engine would be a welcome addition, though it remains absent in the 3-Door.
Features are expected to stay aligned with existing trims, as the Roxx is already well-equipped. While Mahindra has not confirmed this development, the brand is also exploring hybrid powertrains, though these may debut on a new platform.
