Punjab: Amrinder Singh likely to meet Sonia Gandhi today

Chandigarh: Former Punjab Chief Minister and Congress leader captain Amarinder Singh is likely to meet party president Sonia Gandhi in Delhi today.

The meeting comes days after Congress suffered a loss to the Akali dal in the assembly elections.

Owning responsibility for the party's defeat in the assembly elections, Mr Singh made it clear that he has no intentions of resigning.  "I have owned up responsibility for the party's defeat in the elections and have not resigned and nor do I intend to do so," he said. He said he would only "resign or retire" after leading the party to victory.

When asked about the speculations about his resignation, he said, "I will strictly go according to the directions of the party president."

The Amarinder-Sonia meeting comes a day after the party's UP chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi met Mrs Gandhi and submitted her resignation, accepting responsibility for the party's defeat in Uttar Pradesh.
