After Train Derailment, Heavy Traffic Jams in Mumbai

Heavy showers in the evening and a derailment added to the chaos on the streets.

Mumbai: Mumbai witnessed heavy traffic jams on Tuesday after extra buses were pumped into service to clear the rush of passengers who had to depend on road transport after a local train derailed at the Andheri station in the morning.

With the Ganesh Festival approaching, Mumbai's road network is already under pressure as people are travelling out of the city to go their homes. That coupled with heavy showers in the evening and a derailment added to the chaos on the streets.

The anger spilled on to Twitter where people complained about being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for hours.

Traffic was worst affected on the arterial Western Express Highway that connects Mumbai's western suburbs to the island city. Cars and buses moved bumper-to-bumper between Mahim and Dahisar. Among those worst affected were people headed to the airport to catch flights.

But the effect spilled over to the connecting roads as well, with major thoroughfares like SV Road, Linking Road, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road also experiencing traffic snarls.

The situation is expected to improve on Wednesday as the train services will return to normal by Tuesday night.
