Mumbai: Bodies of 2 college girls found in Badlapur lake

Mumbai: The police are investigating the mystery deaths of two 20-year-old college students on Monday. Mayuri Chaudhary and Rashmi Goklani were Bachelors of Computer Science course students at the Smt Chandibai Himathlal Mansukhani college, Ulhasnagar.

Mayuri, a resident of Dombivli, and Rashmi of Ulhasnagar, had last attended college on Monday and their bodies were found in water accumulated at an old quarry in a dense forest at Badlapur on Thursday evening. Police found their belongings on the banks of the water-body. Police said that the two may have gone swimming and got drowned, but it is not known who took them to the isolated place in Badlapur. Suicide or murder is not being ruled out.

The prima facie post-mortem report has been kept reserved for opinion by doctors, and the viscera has been preserved to get further details about the cause of death.

Both the girls' families alleged that the police have been shoddy in carrying out investigations and registered a case of accidental death though they suspect that the two were killed. Rashmi's brother Deepak said, "I learned at the college that a student, Dnyaneshwar Masne, had proposed to my sister's friend Mayuri. A day after she rejected the proposal, Dnyaneshwar's sister-in-law came to college to try and persuade Mayuri to get married."

He added, "It was only when I informed the police about it that they called him for questioning and then let him go. He was again called for questioning when the bodies were found." Mayuri's phone records have revealed that a day prior she had received many calls from Bunty Meswani from Ahmedabad. Police officials have left for Ahmedabad to question Meswani.

The girls' families alleged that they were treated very badly at the Central police station in Ulhasnagar and Ramnagar police station, where they had gone to file the missing person's complaints on Monday.
