Eight ceasefire violations by Pakistan today in Jammu and Kashmir: sources

Jammu: The heavy firing and shelling along India's international border with Pakistan continues, with at least eight incidents of ceasefire violations reported today.

Sources in the army say heavy firing is on since 9 pm today at five different locations in the RS Pura sector in Jammu sector of the restive state.

Pakistani troops targeted the Border Security Force posts with small arms initially, but now the attack has intensified with mortars and rockets being fired from across the border, sources said.

The relentless attacks coincided with Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif hinting that the US intervention could resolve the contentious Kashmir issue.

India has said it will assess the situation arising out of the sharp increase in ceasefire violations, but for the time being, it will leave it to the two directors general of military operations (DGMOs) who have been asked to restore peace.

There have been over 150 incidents of ceasefire violations by Pakistan in the last two months.

In the backdrop of the increased ceasefire violations, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde will visit the areas the international border on October 22 to review the security situation.

Intelligence sources say there are more than 40 training camps across the Line of Control and 700 militants are ready to infiltrate. More ceasefire violations are likely just before winter sets in and snow blocks the passes, they add.
