Prince George turned 12 on July 22, and with the milestone comes the possibility of a shift in his royal travel arrangements. The British royal family traditionally follows a protocol under which direct heirs to the throne do not fly together, People magazine reported. The rule is in place to safeguard the line of succession in the event of an unforeseen tragedy. It came into effect for Prince William when he turned 12.
Speaking on A Right Royal Podcast in 2023, King Charles' former pilot Graham Laurie had said: "Interestingly, we flew all four: the Prince (Charles), the Princess (Diana), Prince William, and Prince Harry, until William was 12. After that, he had to travel separately, and all four could only fly together with written permission from Her Majesty," referring to Queen Elizabeth II.
Now, Prince William and Princess Kate may face a similar decision when travelling with their children. They may have to seek permission from King Charles to travel with all three of them - Prince George, now 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7.

However, the Prince and Princess of Wales have relaxed several royal traditions in recent years to prioritise family life and offer their children a sense of normalcy despite their royal roles. They have even missed some royal engagements, especially in recent months, to focus on family during the Princess of Wales's cancer treatment. It it yet to be revealed whether they will adhere to the royal travel protocol.
