Ireland Is Offering Rs 70 Lakh To Restore Vacant Homes On Its Offshore Islands

The Irish government is encouraging people to convert vacant properties on its offshore islands into permanent homes, either for their own use or for rental purposes.

Ireland Is Offering Rs 70 Lakh To Restore Vacant Homes On Its Offshore Islands
At present, there are around 30 offshore islands that are cut off due to multiple factors.

Imagine waking up to the sound of waves on a peaceful island with stunning landscapes and a rich cultural heritage. If island life appeals to you, this offer might catch your interest. Ireland is now offering significant grants to those willing to renovate vacant houses on its scenic offshore islands. These coastal islands hold cultural and historical significance for the country. However, many have seen their populations decline steadily over the years.

At present, there are around 30 offshore islands that are cut off by the tide daily, have no bridge or causeway linking them to the mainland, and retain permanent, year-round populations. For these communities to survive, reliable transport and improved infrastructure are vital.

Breathing Life Back Into Ireland's Islands

In June 2023, the Irish government launched the 'Our Living Islands' policy, a 10-year national plan aimed at reversing depopulation on these remote islands by fostering sustainable and vibrant communities where people can live and develop long-term.

As part of this policy, the government introduced a Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, funded through the Croi Conaithe Towns Fund. Under this scheme, individuals who wish to turn a vacant or derelict property into a permanent home or a rental unit can receive up to 50,000 euros (approximately Rs 50 lakh) in grant support.

If the cost of renovations exceeds 50,000 euros, an additional top-up grant of up to 20,000 euros (approximately Rs 20 lakh) may be available, bringing the total possible grant to nearly Rs 70 lakh.

  • Intend to use the property as a primary private residence, or offer it as a rental
  • Provide evidence that the property has been vacant for at least two years and was built on or before 2007

Not A Relocation Or Residency Policy

The scheme does not offer direct relocation payments to individuals or families to move to the islands. Nor does it include any measures related to immigration or resettlement. Residency and immigration requirements for these offshore islands remain consistent with the rest of Ireland.
