From caves featuring extensive carvings to majestic waterfalls that instantly evoke a sense of peace, this land is simply a natural haven. On Instagram, Ankur Warikoo documented his recent journey to such wonders in Maharashtra. On Instagram, the entrepreneur and content creator shared a few sneak peeks from his travel diaries, captured at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Ajanta and Ellora Caves. Declaring them as the most astonishing places to visit in India, he wrote, “The Ajanta and Ellora caves are, hands down, the most amazing monuments that I have seen in India.”

He even compared the site with the majestic 6th of the New 7 Wonders of the World, based on a 2007 global poll and various ranking lists, and mentioned, “Even better than the Taj Mahal, which I thought was irreplaceable.”

But what truly impressed him? Kailasa Temple in Ellora Caves. Describing the historic significance of the temple, he continued, “The largest monolithic rock-temple in the world, which means this temple has been carved out from a single piece of rock using a chisel and hammer. 1,500 years back. It was built over 200 years across 10 generations. HAS TO BE VISITED by every Indian, once in their lifetime.”

Not only this, but Ankur Warikoo was also left captivated by another tourist spot during his Mumbai trip. Sharing a picture in the carousel, he also talked about the Bibi ka Maqbara, which was built by Aurangzeb's son (Azam Shah) for his mother (Rabia-ul-Daurani). “Also called Deccan Taj, for its obvious resemblance to the Taj,” he concluded.

1. Ajanta Caves: 

You can explore the series of ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves known for their murals and artwork. These also depict stories from Buddhist scriptures, as well as mesmerising paintings and sculptures.

What to do: You will need 4-5 hours to explore the extensively maintained caves. It remains open every day from 9 AM to 5 PM but is closed on Mondays.

This site features 34 caves and a complex of rock-cut temples and monasteries spanning Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions, located in the Aurangabad region.

What to do: You can admire the Kailasa Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, walk through the rock-cut architecture, and discover the blend of various religious cultures here, offering a glimpse into India's rich history. This remains open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM.

3. Bibi ka Maqbara

It is a separate mausoleum also located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. It is often included on tours with the Ajanta and Elora caves because of its location in the same region. Many travellers club all three sites during their trip to Maharashtra. 

What to do: You can appreciate the architecture of the mausoleum, visit the on-site Mughal-era museum, and climb the octagonal tower for views during sunsets. It remains open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM.
