Sanchez wins 8th Tour stage

Saint-Girons:

Luis Leon Sanchez of Spain won a sprint between four breakaway riders to capture Saturday's eighth stage of the Tour de France, while Lance Armstrong retained third overall.

Rinaldo Nocentini of Italy retained the yellow jersey for a second day by finishing in the pack along with seven-time winner Armstrong and Astana teammate Alberto Contador.

Sanchez, who won the Paris-Nice stage race in March, pointed skyward and tapped his chest after he crossed the line just ahead of France's Sandy Casar and Mikel Astarloza of Spain.

They clocked 4 hours, 31 minutes, 50 seconds for the 176.5-kilometer (110-mile) trek along three big climbs from the Pyrenean principality of Andorra to Saint-Girons, France.

Vladimir Efimkin, the straggler of the breakaway four, was fourth, three seconds behind, while the main pack trailed 1:54 back.

Overall, Nocentini retained his six-second lead over 2007 Tour winner Contador, and Armstrong is eight seconds back. Astana rider Levi Leipheimer is fourth, 39 seconds back.

The Tour ends July 26 in Paris, with the Alps, a final individual time trial, and the dreaded Mont Ventoux awaiting.
