Vellore: A girl studying in class VI today died after she set herself ablaze in the toilet of her school, police said.

11-year-old K Harini poured kerosene over her body and set herself on fire in the toilet of the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Pernampet, about 60 km from Vellore.

Some students, after hearing screams from a toilet, alerted the school authorities. She was immediately rushed to a government hospital where she succumbed to burns, they said.

"The girl suffered 100 per cent burns and died even while she was being treated at a government hospital," Pernampet Police Inspector M T Iruthayaraj said.

The school was closed after the incident, which led to anxiety among the parents and teachers as well.

"This child had concealed kerosene in a pet bottle and had poured it all over herself. Only certain portions of the foot was not burnt," Mr Iruthayaraj said.

The motive behind her taking the extreme step was under investigation, he added.
