- An elderly woman in Kerala stopped a scooter rider from using a footpath in Kozhikode
- The woman firmly confronted the rider and recorded his rule-breaking on her phone
- The rider eventually left the footpath and returned to the road after her intervention
In a country where civic sense is a scarce commodity, an elderly woman in Kerala has won plaudits online for showing citizens how to behave in public. In a now-viral Instagram video, posted by a user named @aflu_stories_ the woman can be seen confronting a man riding a scooter on a footpath in Kozhikode, and urging him to leave the walking space.
In the clip, the woman can be seen holding her ground after several bike and scooter riders had encroached onto the footpath to avoid traffic. The woman stood in the middle, even when the rider attempted to skirt past her. At one point, she even whipped out a phone, seemingly recording the rider breaking the rules.
While the driver initially protested, the woman's firm stance and clear instructions left him little room to argue, forcing him to abandon riding on the footpath and retreat on the road.
"Yesterday, near the traffic signal in Eranhipalam, Kozhikode. Stopping the bike from riding on the footpath by going all alone. It is true that this can cause a big accident. This has to be stopped or should be stopped. Bikes are whizzing along the path where the elderly and children are walking. I don't know who the woman was who reacted against this, but big salute," the accompanying video was captioned.

'She Fought That Battle'
As of the last update, the video had garnered over 21 million views and thousands of comments as social media users lauded the woman for standing her ground.
“A lady her age shouldn't be fighting for her right to use the side walk but it is a shame that she has to," said one user while another added: "Her smile at the end is not only her victory, it's for whole of us she fought that battle! How I wish I could meet her."
A third commented: "She was my hostel warden, but she felt like family. I still remember that night me and my friends playing cards at 1 am, laughing like crazy, and suddenly she walked in and scolded me like I had committed a big crime. She was strict, loud, and scary at times but she was also the most caring and loving soul."
A fourth said: "The fact that he fought for so long to go rather than just realize his mistake and go back even after the traffic cleared up is insane. We need to do better."
