Mumbai schools shut after buses go on strike

Mumbai schools shut after buses go on strike
Mumbai: At least 50,000 school bus owners in Mumbai have gone on an indefinite strike starting from today. The bus owners' association claims they are striking against the government's laid back attitude towards amending the school bus safety policy.

They say their demands aren't being heard.

Gauging the inconvenience it would cause to students, many schools across the city have declared a holiday.

The association said their representatives were called for a meeting with the Maharashtra government on Wednesday but their demands were not met.

"No concrete assurance has been received from the government," Association president Anil Garg said.

After their objections, the state government had appointed a committee to look into the matter. The panel submitted its report on January 31 but it has been not been implemented so far, he said.
