Mumbai: Caught driving drunk? Get clicked

Mumbai: People caught driving when they are drunk will now have to pose for photographs on the road. The home department has decided to take photographs of the drunken drivers to avoid any case of mistaken identity.

The case of a custodial death of a person who was jailed for drunken driving in Ghatkopar came up for discussion in the assembly on Wednesday. The custodial death of Deepak Paikrao had created an outrage in the city in July. Paikrao was jailed in place of his boss Shrikant Kamble, who was caught for drunken driving. Paikrao had agreed to serve the punishment in place of Kamble. The entire episode came to light only after Paikrao's death.

"Until Paikrao's death the police did not realise that an innocent person was serving the sentence for his boss. To avoid such cases we have decided to take pictures of the person caught for drunken driving," said home minister RR Patil in the lower house during question hour.
Patil turned down the demand for booking Kamble under section 302 of IPC. "Paikrao was sent to jail after he willingly agreed to serve the punishment. He was equally involved in the crime, and hence, Kamble alone cannot be held responsible," he said.
