5 Tips To Overcome Social Anxiety

Little by little, you can get over this

5 Tips To Overcome Social Anxiety
Start small to treat social anxiety

Everyone longs for a spot of me-time spent by themselves with a chick flick and takeout. But when it happens frequently enough that you're cancelling plans to stay alone, that might be a problem. Social anxiety is the fear of social situations that involve interaction with other people. If you find yourself facing social anxiety, we've got 5 tips to help overcome it.

1. Breathe

It may sound silly, but if you're faced with a social situation that you aren't very keen on, just breathe. Focus on your breathing, your inhaling and exhaling. In a matter of a few minutes, it will help steady your heart rate rather than leave you in a panicky sweat. That will help tackle what's ahead of you.

2. Brush Up

Those who suffer from social anxiety are sometimes unsure how to behave with people. Simply brushing up your people skills can make you a confident guest in the presence of others. You can do this by making eye contact, firmly shaking hands, paying a compliment and calling to relay a message rather than sending it by text.

3. Don't Push

Throwing yourself into a completely unknown situation won't help overcome it. Instead, that might make you feel worse. Don't push but slowly teeter outside your comfort zone. First venture with a group of close friends and family, then with fewer people, then with just one and maybe even alone when you're prepared for it.

4. Work It Out

Overthinking can only make social anxiety worse. The only way you can prevent that is by getting out of your head. Tiring yourself out with a workout or grocery run can prevent adrenaline from building up and making you more anxious.

5. Listen

If you don't want to talk at a gathering, then listen. Everyone is waiting to talk their heart out and a warm person to confide in can make the right impact.

These tips can reduce social anxiety to a great extent. However in case it doesn't fade, seeking the help of a medical professional is always a good idea.
