The menstrual cycle as we understand is a monthly process where the uterus discharges blood and tissue. We must primarily know how our periods work and rightly manage them. Adhering to some basic hygienic practices during menstruation is of personal importance. It is vital that we follow certain practices when it comes to staying clean during the monthly period cycle.  Unhygienic and poor practices can have a significant impact on the overall health of a woman.  It can lead to urinary infections, increase the chances of several other infections and can also lead to reproductive health problems.

Hygiene Tips To Follow For Happy Periods

Here are some of the best menstrual hygiene practices that one needs to be aware of.

1. Wash And Clean Yourself Properly

Washing the vaginal area regularly helps keep it fresh and clean and shields it from any kind of infection. While you menstruate, the blood that comes out gives rise to bacterial growth, hence it is advised to wash and keep the area clean. However, one has to be cautious while washing the vaginal region or the vulva, as overdoing it can disturb the pH balance, making the area vulnerable to yeast and bacterial infections.

2. Don't Wear The Pad For Too Long

The blood once it leaves the body gets mixed and contaminated with our body's innate organs. Wearing the pad for too long leaves a habitat susceptible for bacterial growth as it gets damper with blood and sweat. This can cause infections, skin irritations and severely can also lead to urinary or vaginal infections. It is recommended to change the pad every 4-5 hours in a day, to keep the vaginal area dry and free from getting infected.

3. Dispose Of Pads Correctly

An essential hygiene practice also involves disposing of the pad or tampon the right way, to avoid making it a breeding ground for bacteria and contaminating the surroundings with the foul smell.  Flushing them down the toilet is hazardous and should never be practiced as it can lead to blockage. Alternatively, wrapping the pad or tampons properly and, ensuring the smell and infections are contained should be how sanitary napkins should be disposed. Washing hands thoroughly too should be followed.

4. Avoid Using Soaps Or Harsh Products

The vagina is considered a self-cleaning canal of the body. It has its own cleaning mechanisms, which balance the good and bad bacteria. It is best to let it do its job, and not hamper the natural process through the use of soaps or harsh detergents. You sure need to use soaps on the external part but not inside the vulva or your vagina as it can again disturb the natural balance of the vaginal flora. You can however use some warm water to keep the area clean and pat dry thoroughly.

Every woman has her own way of dealing with periods and its subsequent dos and don'ts. While these are some basic and regular practices to be followed during the menstrual cycle, other tips also include wearing lightweight and breathable clothes during this time; avoiding using scented products, maintaining a record of the cycle and flow etc.  Stay clean, stay hygienic!
