Rains Cloud Kerala Election Day But Voters Shine

47-year-old Udayan AS has been on bed-rest since more than a month, but fighting the pain he reached his polling station to vote.

Kottayam: An abrupt spell of rains on polling day in Kerala, failed to deter many excited voters as they queued up in front of voting booths, registering 71 per cent turnout till 5 pm.

In Kottayam, 25-year-old Anu, reached the polling booth, decked up as a gorgeous bride. Her wedding ceremony was to start in less than two hours. Already late at the beauty parlour, she insisted she wanted to cast her vote - her first ever.

"I am very happy and excited that I have been able to cast my first vote," a smiling Anu told NDTV.

47-year-old Udayan AS, scales coconut trees for a living, but has been on bed-rest since more than a month, with a fractured foot. But fighting the pain and the consistent drizzle, Udayan reached his polling station to vote.

Puthupally in Kottayam is seen as a Congress bastion and a confident Oommen Chandy emerged a smiling aftercasting his vote, accompanied by his family.

"I am sure UDF is heading for a second consecutive term," he told NDTV.

Challenging him is 26-year-old Jake C Thomas, who has cast his first Assembly election vote today.

"The youth want a change. The Left has rallied a lot around me and for me. It's the young and the elderly who will vote for me," said  the first-time contender.

Casting his vote also was Kerala's Governor P Sathasivam in Thiruvananthapuram. "According to Raj Bhavna, this governor may perhaps be the first to vote in Kerala in an Assembly election," District Collector Biju Prabhakar told NDTV.
