As Kerala rebuilds itself from its once in a century flood, NASA shared before and after images of the massive destruction the southern state faced since late July this year. The stain of death and devastation wrought by the flood will take longer than a season to wash away.

More than a week after the floodwater began subsiding, animal carcasses are still floating in Kerala's backwaters, and in places a nauseating stench rises like a wall when the wake from a passing boat breaks the surface.

The helicopter, equipped with ventilators, monitors, suction machines, oxygen cylinders and other emergency medical equipment, is first-of-its kind "flying ICU" that is being used in an emergency situation in India.

A bishop, now 100-years-old, says the floods which have devastated Kerala are far worse than the one which choked the state way back in 1924.

As flood waters rose to engulf their homes at Kainakary, a picturesque village in Alappuzha district, at least 20 families took refuge in a church cemetery and are living in the company of the dead with their domestic animals.

In Kerala, floodwaters have receded and people are now trying to return home. Patanamthitta district of Kerala is one of the worst hit. CRPF personnel have been helping people in Kerala remove toxic waste from their house and make them ready to live in again.

Soiled books, smashed furniture,damaged equipment and rooms and corridors filled with slush tugged at the heart strings of volunteers, officials and armed forces personnel at flood-hit schools they went to clean.

As relief and rehabilitation work initon in flood ravaged Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today urged all Malayalees to donate one month salary to rebuild the state,where the death toll has now touched 302 and over four lakh are still in relief camps.
