Karimganj, Assam:
A 33-year-old woman MLA and her second husband were beaten up by a mob of around 100 people at a hotel in Assam on Friday. Both sustained injuries in the attack but said to be out of danger now.
Congress leader Rumi Nath, who represents Borkhola assembly constituency, married Jaki Jakir, a Muslim, last month and converted to Islam. She had allegedly not divorced her first husband.
The couple was visiting Karimganj town to meet Ms Nath's father. It was their first visit to her home constituency after marriage. At night, while they were having dinner at a hotel, a mob attacked them. The police then rescued them and sent them to Silchar Medical College Hospital. They were later escorted to Guwahati for security reasons, police said.
Some reports say they were attacked because they had together visited a temple during the day. Four people have been arrested in the case.
"Last night, after Rumi Nath and Jaki Jakir had come to a hotel after meeting Ms Nath's father, a crowd of people surrounded them and physically assaulted them. We have registered a case and arrested four people." Jayanta Choudhury, DGP Assam said.
Rumi Nath was first elected to the Assembly in 2006 on a BJP ticket from Borkhola constituency. She later defected to the Congress and won the seat a second time in the 2011 elections.
Her first husband Rakesh Singh, with whom she has a two-year-old daughter, had filed an FIR last month saying his wife was missing last month, report the Press Trust of India.
