Mamata Banerjee today filed nomination papers from Kolkata's Bhowanipore constituency

Highlights

  • Seat a Trinamool stronghold but opposition fielding high-profile names
  • BJP fielding Netaji Subas Chandra Bose's grand-nephew from Bhowanipore
  • Deep Das Munshi the candidate from Congress
Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today filed her nomination papers from Bhowanipore constituency in Kolkata.

Ms. Banerjee after filing her nomination this noon at Survey Building in Alipore area headed to Asansol, to address a rally.

A crowd of supporters greeted her as she came out of the building after filing her nomination. "Mamata Banerjee does not need to campaign in her constituency (Bhowanipore) to defeat Deepa Das Munshi (Congress candidate)," a Trinamool supporter said.

Ms. Banerjee is expected to win the seat given the area is a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress, but with opposition parties fielding high profile candidates in the constituency it's a high pitched battle.

The BJP has fielded Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose, who also filed his nomination papers today, from Mamata Banerjee's constituency.

Congress' candidate Deepa Das Munshi, wife of veteran Congress leader Priya Ranjan Das Munshi, complained about being verbally abused by Trinamool supporters when she went to file her nomination. "This is not a battle of Congress & Left with TMC or BJP. It is the TMC's battle with the rest of West Bengal," Mrs Das Munshi said.
