- He has a son Muthu from his first wife Padmavati
- MK Azhagiri and MK Stalin are his sons from his second marriage with Dayaluammal
- Azhargiri is an MP from Madurai and now a cabinet minister
- Kanimozhi is his daughter from the third marriage with Rajathiammal, and is a Rajya Sabha MP
- His grand nephew Dayanidhi Maran is also a cabinet minister and his brother Kalanidhi runs the Sun TV network
