Railways to Run Awareness Campaign for Cleanliness

New Delhi: Railways is set to start an awareness campaign in order to keep coaches clean and deter people from smoking and drinking in rail premises. Announcements will start in selected trains.

Railways has decided to educate the passengers about various provisions involving the welfare of the passengers in a pre-recorded messages in trains, said a senior Railway Ministry official.

Currently trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto are equipped with having public address system. But pre-recorded announcements are made at the time of departure of train from the originating station/intermediate station and also at the time of arrival of the train at intermediate station/destination.

Besides announcing arrival and departure, messages such as not giving tips (bakshish) to waiters and in case of any demand of tips by a waiter, make a complaint to the onboard ticket checking staff will be announced regularly in trains having public announcement system.

Passengers will be told in public announcement system that "Smoking and creating nuisance under intoxication is not permissible in the trains. Any passenger found violating this provision is liable to be taken up under extant provisions of law."

They will also be asked crush disposable water bottles after use and contact On-Board Housekeeping Service for cleaning of toilets and compartments on running trains.

"Dial 182" for security related complaints will be repeatedly announced for the benefit of passengers during the journey.
