New Delhi: India's 14th President Ram Nath Kovind will speak to the nation today at 7 pm - his first address on the eve of Independence Day. The government in a statement said All India Radio (AIR) and all channels of state-run broadcaster Doordarshan will air his speech at 7 pm in Hindi, followed by a version in English.

The government said AIR will broadcast the regional language versions of President Ram Nath Kovind's speech on India's 71st Independence Day at 8 pm on its regional radio channels.

President Kovind is likely to speak on important issues that the country is facing today. President Kovind was sworn in on July 25. He won against former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar by getting close to two-thirds of the votes.

President Kovind has given assent to six legislations within three weeks after taking charge, news agency PTI reported. One of the legislations was extension of jurisdiction of trial in cases of maritime claims, arrests and detentions of ships to various courts. The legislations were passed in the monsoon session of Parliament which ended on 11 August.
