Pranab Mukherjee is headed to Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Congress has to find not only a Leader of the Lok Sabha to fill his shoes, but also someone to contest the Jangirpur Lok Sabha seat he vacates. Mr Mukherjee's son, Abhijit, has reportedly said he'd like to give that a shot.
Abhijit Mukherjee, 52, is at present the Congress MLA from Nalhati in West Bengal. He has reportedly asked Baharampur MP Adhir Chowdhury, who is the district Congress president, to forward his name for his father's seat. The Congress is yet to take a decision on this.
Mr Mukherjee represented Jangirpur twice. He won in 2004 and in 2009.
Mr Mukherjee junior joined the Congress just before the 2011 West Bengal Assembly polls, and was fielded from and won Nalhati. He graduated as a mechanical engineer from Kolkata's Jadavpur University and worked in the corporate sector in companies like Maruti, BHEL and SAIL, before entering politics.
