New Delhi:
The Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI has not found enough evidence against Congress leader Digvijaya Singh in the case of alleged irregularities in the construction of a mall in Indore, probed by it on the orders of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, agency sources claimed.
After nearly one-and-a-half years of probe, the CBI came to conclusion that there was not enough evidence on the record on the basis of which he could be made charged in the case, they said.
The sources said CBI has informed about the status of the case to the High Court in a report filed in "sealed cover".
They said High Court was free to order the agency on the future course of action.
The case was taken up by the agency in 2012 on the orders of Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court which had directed it to probe "roles of senior officials, the then Chief Minister, and Chief Secretary, and environment minister" among others.
The case relates to allegations that the mall was illegally built on a residential plot of one lakh square feet, with undue concessions from the then state government under former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh.
In its order on October 19, 2012 division bench of justices P K Jaisawal and Moolchand Garg had directed the CBI to probe the matter and report back in six months.
The bench gave the direction on a plea by social activist Mahesh Garg who had filed a complaint with the state Economic Offences Wing in 2009 which had given a clean-chit to Mr Singh. It filed a closure report giving clean chit to Mr Singh, while saying there was a case against six others including the
developers.
After the closure report, Garg filed a PIL in the High Court.
