Meira Kumar says she doesn't favour caste census

New Delhi: In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar has indicated that she is not in favour of a caste census. "I have always worked towards a casteless society. I don't know when that time will arrive, but we should be able to do away with this discrimination based on this caste system. So anything which leads to that I would endorse.... I would not like to go into detail and comment because I don't think as a Speaker I should be doing that. But as somebody who is committed to casteless society, I would like to support any measure towards that."

The Speaker also described as "speculation" that she may come back to politics possibly as a chief ministerial candidate for Bihar after her term as Speaker ends.

On the Women's Bill, the Speaker said a political consensus is a must in the Lok Sabha, where she made it clear that a repeat of the Rajya Sabha was not favourable, where marshals were called in to remove protesting MPs, a move that was widely criticized by the Opposition.
