Little China at Tamil university

Vellore: A classroom filled with Chinese students hangs on every word that Dr Viswanathan says.  There are Indian students as well. Some, not many.

At this university in Nellore, China is the super-power.  400 students have arrived here from Beijing and Shanghai to study Commerce and Computer Science.  When the foreign students go back home, they could have jobs waiting for them, courtesy India. `` We are signing an MoU with Indian IT majors that want to recruit Chinese graduates, educated in India, for their operations in China", explains the chancellor, Dr. G. Viswanathan .

Pork and rice are on the menu at the canteen cooked by a chef imported from Beijing.  Perhaps as a way of extracting revenge, local students have made the Chinese watch Rajinikanth films.  With smashing results. "It was great to see Chinese students wearing dhotis and singing Pongalo Pongal. Some even rode a bullock cart!" says a professor.

For Sun Wei, what started out as a fling with India has turned into a full-blown affair:  "I would love to get a job in India. As for studying here, it`s great because software and engineering areas are very good here."

English is taught in the first year to all Chinese students. Along with a healthy appreciation for dosas.
