Kolkata-based industrialist Pawan Ruia has been arrested by the Cyber Crime Wing of West Bengal Police for his alleged involvement in a multi-crore online fraud.

Ruia was arrested from near a five-star hotel in New Town area last evening. The alleged online fraud is worth around Rs 300 crore, police sources said, suggesting that it was part of a larger racket.

The industrialist was arrested after a senior citizen lodged a complaint that he had been cheated, and an investigation found that the money had landed in accounts linked to Ruia.

The senior citizen in Salt Lake was defrauded of Rs 93 lakh after he installed an APK file on his mobile phone after being promised huge returns on investment, police said.

During the probe into the Cyber Crime Wing, the money was traced to the bank accounts of shell companies allegedly belonging to members of the Ruia family, police said.

Ruia has been charged with cheating, criminal breach of trust, and forgery. Further investigation is underway, with sources saying that other members of the Ruia family after also under scanner.
