Jawans guarding Gateway forced to sleep on pavement
Mumbai: The pictures showed a shocking but familiar story.

Jawans appointed to guard the Gateway of India sleeping at the monument they're meant to protect after Mumbai's 26/11 attacks. These men were not given rooms or toilets to use.  Instead, they pitched tents at the Gateway, turned into squatters near the Taj Hotel.

NDTV and other media reported on this story on Thursday, and instead of finding a solution, the government and local police reacted by forcing the jawans to give up their tents; they spent the night on the pavement. (Read: Guarding us without beds, homes)

On Thursday, Mumbai's Police Commissioner gave NDTV a predictable response: "We will look into the matter and take appropriate action," said D Sivanandan, Mumbai Police Commissioner.
