Fresh Protests in Kolkata's Jadavpur University After Vice Chancellor Enters Campus

Students of Jadavpur University held a massive protest on September 20.

Kolkata:  Fresh protests broke out on the Jadavpur University (JU) campus today when Vice-Chancellor Abhijit Chakraborty walked in, a week after students organised a massive rally in the city against the alleged molestation of a student.

"The VC today came to the campus at around 12 noon and went to his office. We are protesting against the VC's entry into the campus. We want him to step down," said a member of JU's students' union.

Mr Chakraborty's visit to the JU campus comes on the day when a proposed march to the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lal Bazar was called off by protesting students after cases against them were withdrawn.

Thousands of students had marched through the city's streets last Saturday demanding Mr Chakraborty's resignation.

West Bengal Governor KN Tripathi, who is also the Chancellor of JU, has intervened in the matter calling for an end to the stalemate at the prestigious institution where students continue to boycott classes.
