Ujjain: Six people were killed and nearly 40 injured as lightning and thunderstorms hit the site of the on-going Simhastha-Kumbh Mela in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain.

Four devotees and one sadhu had died while a pandal collapsed due to strong winds. A woman pilgrim died after being struck by a bolt of lightening.

"A woman pilgrim was killed in Undasa area when the lightning struck her," Ujjain Superintendent of Police Manohar Verma said. She is yet to be identified.

Squall coupled with rain suddenly hit the area, uprooting several 'akharas' or camps of sadhus.

The month-long Simhastha Kumbh Mela began in Ujjain last Friday.

Ujjain District Collector Kavindra Kiyawat said nearly 40 people were injured in the thunderstorm.

Minister in-charge of Ujjain, Bhupendra Singh, said that no major damage was reported from anywhere and things were under control, adding the injured had been shifted to a hospital.
