At 71, Chiranjeevi continues to challenge the idea that ageing automatically means slowing down. As the Telugu cinema Mega Star celebrates his birthday on August 22, his commitment to staying active and physically prepared remains a source of inspiration for fans. With a career spanning more than four decades, Chiranjeevi has taken on roles that demand considerable physical energy, agility and stamina. Even in his 70s, the actor continues to train in the gym and has shared glimpses of his workouts while preparing for his upcoming projects. His recent fitness videos have shown him performing resistance exercises, rope drills, bicep-focused movements and other strength-training exercises. The consistency is particularly notable because the actor underwent a minor shoulder keyhole surgery earlier this year.
"71-year-old Chiranjeevi is still so active, which brings out an important medical fact, that aging is inevitable but the fall of the body is not necessarily inevitable at the same pace. After 60, the real battle is not just against weight gain but against the progressive loss of muscle strength, mobility, balance and metabolic resilience," says Dr. Sanjay Raina, HOD, Internal Medicine, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad.
Chiranjeevi's Approach To Fitness
Chiranjeevi's workout routine highlights an important principle of fitness after 70: staying active does not necessarily mean training like a professional athlete. Strength training, when appropriately planned, can help older adults maintain muscle mass and physical function. Ageing is naturally associated with a gradual decline in muscle strength and mass, but regular resistance exercise can help slow this process.
"'From a physician's perspective, I would argue very strongly that muscle is one of the most under-appreciated markers of healthy aging. Aging with independence and energy can be greatly influenced by consistent strength training, walking or other aerobic exercise, sufficient protein intake, consumption of vegetables and whole foods, and maintaining sensible portion sizes. In particular, WHO recommendations for adults over 65 specifically highlight aerobic activity, muscle strengthening and balance exercises," says Dr. Raina. "But people shouldn't just follow a celebrity's diet or workout like sheep. What works for one person at 71 may not be right for someone else with diabetes, heart disease, arthritis or other health conditions," Dr Raina adds.
Why Strength Training Becomes Important With Age
Muscle mass and strength tend to decline as people get older. If this decline becomes significant, it can contribute to frailty, reduced mobility and a greater risk of falls. Resistance exercises can stimulate muscles and help preserve strength when performed consistently. However, the objective for someone in their 70s should not necessarily be lifting the heaviest possible weights. The focus should be on maintaining functional strength, mobility and independence.
What About Exercise After Surgery?
Chiranjeevi's return to exercise after shoulder surgery also highlights the importance of allowing the body to recover properly. A surgical procedure does not necessarily mean a person has to stop being physically active permanently. However, the timing and intensity of exercise should depend on the type of surgery, healing progress and medical advice. Returning to strenuous resistance exercises too quickly can place unnecessary stress on healing tissues. Older adults recovering from surgery or injury should therefore gradually rebuild strength rather than attempting to immediately return to their previous workout intensity.
What Should A Fitness Routine In Your 70s Include?
There is no single workout that is appropriate for every person over 70. A safe exercise programme should take into account cardiovascular health, joint health, previous injuries, muscle strength and existing medical conditions. A balanced routine may include:
Strength Training
Age-appropriate resistance exercises can help preserve muscle strength and support everyday movement.
Walking Or Aerobic Exercise
Regular walking or another moderate aerobic activity can support cardiovascular fitness and endurance.
Balance Exercises
Balance training becomes particularly important with age because falls can have serious consequences for older adults.
Flexibility And Mobility
Gentle stretching and mobility exercises can help maintain the range of movement required for daily activities.
Don't Copy A Celebrity's Workout
While Chiranjeevi's fitness routine can be motivating, experts generally caution against copying a celebrity's workout without considering individual health and fitness levels. A workout that is appropriate for a trained actor may not be suitable for someone who is new to exercise, has arthritis, cardiovascular disease or is recovering from an injury. The intensity should be increased gradually according to an individual's ability.
Nutrition Matters Too
Exercise alone is not enough to maintain strength as we age. Adequate protein becomes particularly important because older adults can be more vulnerable to age-related muscle loss. A balanced diet containing protein-rich foods, vegetables, fruits, whole grains and healthy fats can support muscle maintenance and overall health. Calcium and vitamin D are also important for maintaining bone health, although individual nutritional requirements can vary. Adequate hydration and sleep are equally important for recovery.
Don't Ignore Medical Check-Ups
Being physically active should complement not replace regular medical care. Older adults, particularly those with a history of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, previous surgery or other chronic conditions, may benefit from discussing their exercise plans with a doctor. Symptoms such as chest pain, unexplained breathlessness, dizziness, fainting or unusual fatigue during exercise should not be ignored. Chiranjeevi's fitness at 71 offers a valuable reminder that ageing does not have to mean giving up physical activity.
"So the broader lesson from personalities like Chiranjeevi is not about discovering an anti-ageing secret. No miracle food or exercise will stop the aging process. If there's one prescription for anti-ageing in medicine, it's consistency get moving every day, preserve your muscle, eat intelligently, get adequate sleep and stay mentally engaged. "Turning 70 shouldn't just be about living longer," he said. "It should be about living well," says Dr Raina. The goal, however, should not be to replicate a celebrity's workout or maintain a youthful appearance at any cost. For most people, fitness in the 70s should be about preserving strength, balance, mobility, cardiovascular health and independence.
