The brown and white Jack Russell Terrier appeared in a dozen films and in ads, but is best known for its role in the silent flick The Artist. He won over audiences with his stage tricks and cute demeanor in the film in which he featured alongside Jean Dujardin.

Uggie was diagnosed with a prostate tumor and was put down last week, TMZ reported. He was 13 years old.

Uggie won a Palm Dog award at the Cannes Film Festival for his performance in the 2011 film.

The comedy-drama tribute to Hollywood's golden age won five Oscars including best picture and best actor for Jean Dujardin. In a tweet, Jean Dujardin wrote, "Fond memories of my extraordinary colleague: R.I.P. Uggie."
