Mumbai: Actor Apurva Agnihotri said that television is ruled by typically 'backward' daily soaps.

Apurva, who has featured in television shows like Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi and Radha Ki Betiyan Kuch Kar Dikhayengi, said that television content has not changed much despite having immense potential.

"If you look at all the top shows, they are typical. Our films have evolved but our television shows are still quite backward. We are still making shows like we used to 15-20 years ago and we haven't evolved at all, which is quite disheartening," Apurva told PTI.

"Balika Vadhu and Udaan are path breaking shows. Among hundreds of shows, there are just three or four that are up there in terms of content. Rest are all reality shows such as music and dance shows," added Apurva.

Apurva, who also featured in Shah Rukh Khan's Pardes, said that television has resurrected the career of Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan.

"The reach of television is so huge. To be very honest, television resurrected Mr Bachchan's career. The best of Bollywood stars are doing television including Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. The reach of TV is so wide that this is the right time to make a transition and give people something worthwhile to watch," he said.

The 43-year-old actor has also participated in reality shows like Big Boss. The actor said that he prefers doing such shows as they are less time consuming assignments.

"I have been around on television but I prefer doing reality shows because they get over fast and there is good money. You are not slogging for 12 hours each day, 25 days a month for years and years. Reality shows are done with in about three months," he added. (Also Read: Apurva Agnihotri: Feel "liberated" after coming out of Bigg Boss house)

Apurva is currently seen on the television show Saubhagyalakshmi.

About his character in the show, Apurva said, "He is a man of a few words. He doesn't care for anything else but his work and family. He's a kind of a recluse and quite like I am in real life. Basically, a boring rich guy."
