Kannada actor Darshan denied bail in assault case

Highlights

  • Bail has been denied to popular Kannada actor Darshan, arrested for allegedly assaulting and pulling a gun on his wife Vijayalakshmi.
  • Vijayalakshmi, on whose complaint the actor had been arrested on September 9, was present in the court yesterday, when arguments were heard from both sides.
  • Earlier, Darshan's attempts to secure bail suffered a setback despite his wife retracting her statement in the court on Monday, September 12. She said her head injuries resulted from a fall in the bathroom, contrary to her allegations in a police complaint on September 8 that Darshan had assaulted and threatened her at gun point.
  • Darshan's bail plea was rejected on September 14 by the First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Venkatesh Hulagi, stating that he did not have jurisdiction to handle the case filed under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder).
  • Darshan was arrested on September 9 and remanded to judicial custody for two weeks.
  • Meanwhile, the Karnataka Film Producers' Association, playing moral police, had imposed a 3-year ban on actor Nikita Thukral. She was named by Vijaylakshmi in her first statement to the police and the association alleged that an affair with her was the reason for the dispute between Darshan and his wife. Nikita has been Darshan's co-star in a few films.
  • The Producers' Association, when asked, said it did not need to penalise Darshan because a legal case was handling complaints of domestic violence against him.
  • Nikita claimed to have no involvement in the entire episode and said she was being unnecessarily dragged into the controversy and punished with the ban.
  • After public criticism, the association lifted the ban on Nikita Thukral on September 15.
  • Darshan is undergoing treatment for asthma and jaundice in a hospital.
