- Bobby Deol is often cast in villainous roles after recent success in such characters
- He aims to break typecasting by choosing diverse projects and varied antagonist roles
- His digital debut in Aashram revived his career, changing his earlier image
Bobby Deol's career has seen an interesting shift in recent years. The actor has earned plenty of praise for his work in projects like Aashram, Animal, Kanguva and Alpha. However, while the success has brought him plenty of attention, Bobby admits that it has also led to him being stereotyped as a villain. He recently opened up about trying to break away from that image and explore a wider range of roles.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Jagran Film Festival, Bobby told PTI that he has been receiving a steady stream of villainous roles. “If an actor becomes successful in a particular kind of role, they keep getting similar roles. That's what happens in the industry,” the actor said.
Bobby acknowledged that being typecast often comes with the territory when an actor finds success in a particular kind of role. However, he said he is now consciously seeking out varied projects to showcase a different side of his acting. “I try really hard to break out of that. I've just done a film called Bandar, which was very different. Even within antagonist roles, there are different kinds of antagonists, with different shades. So I enjoy playing those. I'm also going to do a few web series that will be different,” he added.
Bobby Deol's career witnessed a massive second-innings resurgence after his digital debut in Prakash Jha's web series Aashram. After spending nearly a decade down and out with consecutive box-office flops, his powerful portrayal of the manipulative conman godman Baba Nirala completely shattered his previous chocolate-boy image.
His performance paved the way for another intense antagonist role in the 2023 blockbuster Animal. Since then, Bobby has continued to take on negative roles in films including Hari Hara Veera Mallu, Kanguva, Daaku Maharaj, Alpha and Jana Nayagan.
On the work front, Bobby Deol will next be seen in the Prime Video series Teen Kauwe. The spy drama also features Sidhant Gupta, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Pavail Gulati in key roles.
