New Delhi: New film A Gentleman, starring Sidharth Malhotra and Jacqueline Fernandez, had a poor opening weekend, making Rs 13.13 crore at home, reports trade analyst Taran Adarsh. Sunday's business was not signficantly higher than that of Friday and Saturday, as Bollywood releases have come to expect - ticket sales were in the region of Rs 4 crore on all three days, as per Mr Adarsh's report on Twitter - Rs 4.04 crore on Friday, Rs 4.36 crore on Saturday, Rs 4.73 crore on Sunday. A Gentleman's overseas earnings totalled upto a shade over Rs 7 crore in its first weekend. 'A Gentleman disappoints,' was Taran Adarsh's verdict.

The underwhelming numbers are compounded by reviews which rate the film poorly. Saibal Chatterjee, reviewing for NDTV.com, scored A Gentleman - with Sidharth playing a double role - high on style but low on substance.

He wrote: "Male lead Sidharth Malhotra is a handsome lad with strong screen presence. There is hardly a sequence in the film when the actor isn't on the screen. That is a tough ask. If only Malhotra possessed the histrionic subtleties to pull off the role of a highly trained killer who dreams of happy domesticity - a steady job, a comfortable home, a pretty garden and a family swanky car, all achieved through strictly honest means - A Gentleman would have sparkled a great deal more."

On the day of his film's release, Sidharth Malhotra found himself called out on Twitter for a post about the verdict on Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim while also plugging A Gentleman. His tweet hoped that Haryana would stay safe and be able to go watch the movie. As violent clashes followed Ram Rahim's conviction for rape, Sidharth Malhotra was accused of being 'shameless' and 'ungentlemanly' by Twitter users. He later posted another tweet explaining that his first message was shared before the verdict was announced.
