One Killed in Firing by Security Forces in Srinagar
Srinagar: One protester was killed and two others injured in Srinagar today when security forces opened fire during clashes with protesters soon after polling ended in the Kashmir's capital city.

The clashes broke out once troops deployed on poll duty started withdrawing. The protesting youth pelted stones on security forces as part of anti-election protests in the area. Separatist groups had called for a poll boycott.

Police claim that troops opened fire after the youth a snatched rifle from security forces.

"One person died and two were injured in the firing" a senior police officer said.

Chief minister Omar Abdullah has promised a probe into the incident.

"The circumstances leading to this tragic loss of life would be thoroughly probed," Mr Abdullah said.

In a separate incident in another area of Jammu and Kashmir's capital, a polling official was seriously wounded as protesters throwing rock attacked officials as voting came to a close.

The turnout was low in Srinagar today -- less than 26 per cent -- following a separatist call for boycott of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

A polling official was killed on April 24 when suspected rebels ambushed a government vehicle carrying poll officials back home.
