Bride Smothered To Death Day Before Wedding, Allegedly By Mother

New Delhi: A day before her marriage, a 20-year-old woman was allegedly smothered to death by her mother in northeast Delhi's Seelampur area after she found her daughter with a tenant, police said today.

The incident happened on Saturday night when the victim's mother returned home and found her daughter, allegedly  in a "compromising position" with a tenant in her room. While the tenant managed to escape, the victim's mother smothered her with a pillow, a police official said.

The victim was about to get married in a day and the house was reportedly full of guests.

According to police, the matter came to light after Lok Nayak hospital authorities called the police when the mother and her son brought the victims' body there and tried to get her admitted claiming that she had attempted suicide.

After allegedly smothering her daughter, the woman reportedly called her son and narrated the entire incident. She also told her relatives that her daughter had suffered a cardiac arrest while taking her to hospital, the official said.

Following initial investigations, a case was registered and the victim's mother and brother were arrested today, the official said.

The family belonged to Meerut and had fixed the victim's marriage with a Ghaziabad-based businessman, police said, adding that the victim was allegedly in a relationship with the tenant.

The victim's father died a few years ago, after which her brother took up the job of an electrician in a factory, the official added.
