Ignore Opinion Polls, Says PM to Voters and Amit Shah to BJP

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing an election rally in Delhi.

New Delhi:

After a series of opinion polls predicted first place for Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Admi party (AAP), the BJP's top two leaders have said the predictions should be ignored.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing an election rally in Delhi today dismissed the opinion polls as "lies" and asked voters to remember that before the national election last year, some polls had precited he would lose his race in Varanasi to Mr Kejriwal. Mr Modi won the constituency with a huge margin.

BJP chief Amit Shah, whose micromanagement of the party's strategy for the capital included the enlistment of top Union Ministers for public meetings, will meet tonight with some of those political heavyweights, said sources. They claim Mr Shah will advise them to pay no heed to the opinion poll findings. He is also expected to present internal surveys that show the party winning the election.

An aggregate of three major opinion polls shows AAP winning 37 of the 70 seats, with the BJP getting 29 seats.

Mr Kejriwal governed Delhi as Chief Minister for 49 days last year before resigning over a stalled anti-corruption proposal.

He has asked Delhi to "forgive that mistake".
