Woman found murdered; husband, in-laws booked

Roorkee: A man and six members of his family were booked for allegedly murdering his wife over dowry at Jhabrera area here, police said on Monday.

21-year-old Meenakshi, who got married last year, was found murdered at her husband's house on Sunday evening.

"Based on a complaint by the deceased's father, a case has been registered against Pushkand, his mother Munni, father Jaipal, brother Bablu, sister-in-law Sharmishtha, nephew Prashant and another relative Sanjay for allegedly strangulating the woman over dowry," said Investigating Officer Rajiv Rothan.

In his complaint, the victim's father claimed that after strangulating her last evening, Pushkand and his family hanged her body from the ceiling of their house so as to make it appear as a case of suicide.

They also alleged that Meenakshi, mother of a one-and-a-half-month-old girl child, was being harassed by her husband and in-laws for dowry ever since she got married in June, 2009.

"All the accused are absconding and efforts are on to nab them," the officer said.
